Care Corner

You, looked after

A warm little corner from a shy service pup who wants you to be okay. Everything here is real advice from real sources, and every helpline was checked against an official page. If a con ever gets to be too much, you are allowed to lean on this.

In a life-threatening emergency, call 112. Works anywhere in the EU, free, from any phone. Heatstroke with confusion counts. So does someone in danger.

During the con

You're doing great, honest

A dozen little things I have to remind myself every con. Steal any that help.

01

You belong here. Nobody handed out a real-furry test at the door. If you made it in, you're one of us.

02

It's okay to take a break. Slipping off to a quiet corner isn't rude, it's you looking after the pup that got you here.

03

You don't have to talk to everyone. One good chat beats fifty nervous ones.

04

Your suit, your badge, your art is enough. Comparison is the fastest way to steal your own fun.

05

First con? Everyone here was new once, tail tucked and wide eyed. Good company.

06

A shy hello still counts as brave. You showed up, and that's the hard part.

07

Big feelings are allowed. Overwhelmed, giddy, teary, all normal somewhere this full of joy.

08

You can leave any conversation, room or hug whenever you want. “I need a breather” is a full sentence.

09

Rest is part of the fun, not time stolen from it. A napped pup enjoys day three.

10

Ask for help. Staff and con ops want you to have a good time. Reaching out is never a bother.

11

You don't owe anyone your energy. An hour alone to recharge is self-care, not antisocial.

12

However today went, you did okay. Tomorrow's a fresh start, same warm crowd.

Practical stuff

Keeping the body happy

Sleep, eat, wash: the 6-2-1 rule
At least 6 hours sleep, 2 meals and 1 shower a day. It is the floor, not the ceiling. Skimping tanks your immune system and lines up con crud and con drop.
WikiFur / FurryGuides
Hydrate before you feel thirsty
Carry a screw-top bottle clipped to your belt. Halls are hot and busy, dehydration sneaks up on you, and a sealed bottle keeps your drink yours.
Anthrocon / FurryGuides
Run a HALT check a few times a day
Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired? Those four quietly wreck your mood. Naming one tells you what your body actually needs next.
Cleveland Clinic
Suiting? Break every ~45 minutes
Head off, water, cool down. Suiting overheats you even in mild weather, and short regular breaks stop heat illness before it starts.
Anthrocon
Cool actively, replace your salts
Compression base layer, a neck or head fan, a cooling vest, and electrolytes after suiting. Wicking plus airflow sheds heat, and you lose salts plain water will not replace.
Anthrocon
Know heat exhaustion vs heatstroke
Exhaustion is cool clammy pale skin, heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea: stop, shade, head off, hydrate, rest. Heatstroke is hot skin, confusion or slurred speech, very high temp, fainting: that is a 112 emergency, cool immediately. Confusion is the red flag.
CDC
Plan quiet breaks before you overload
Noise, lights and crowds drain your nervous system fast. A reset you scheduled beats a meltdown you did not.
Anthrocon
Give social anxiety an easy out
Set small goals like “say hi to two people,” and let yourself leave any time. Shrinking the task makes it doable and knowing you can go lowers the pressure.
Anthrocon
Consent goes both ways
Ask before hugs, scritches or photos, and it is completely fine to say no. Everyone reads touch differently, and asking first keeps it safe, especially for shy folks.
Anthrocon
Basic safety, on autopilot
Never leave a drink unattended, keep valuables zipped, buddy up at night, and keep to your meds and alarms. Small habits, big difference.

After the con

The drop is real, and you're not broken

If the days after Awoostria feel grey, flat or tearful, that is post-con depression, and it is extremely common. For a few days your brain was flooded with connection, novelty and belonging. When it ends, ordinary life feels like a deficit even though it is just baseline. It usually lifts within a few days to a week. Most of us do not have this many people who get us back home, so it hits because it mattered. Not weakness. Not a sign you did anything wrong.

Sleep, rehydrate, eat real meals
For a few days. Your body ran a deficit all weekend, and basic recovery is what resets your mood chemistry.
WikiFur
Ease back in, softly
Do not schedule a brutal Monday. A soft landing keeps you from stacking stress on an already tender nervous system.
FurryGuides
Message the people you met
Those friendships are the whole point. A quick hello keeps them alive and buffers the drop.
Furscience 11.4
Share your photos, relive it
Posting about the con reminds you the joy was real and the community is still there. (I will have shots for you too.)
WikiFur
Plan the next meet, even loosely
A concrete “next time” turns a goodbye into an intermission instead of an ending.
WikiFur / FurryGuides
Be kind to yourself
Talk to yourself like a friend who feels low, not a critic. Self-compassion shortens a low patch, self-blame drags it out.

When it's more than the blues

Con drop should lift within a week or so. If the low deepens, lasts much longer, stops you functioning, or you start having thoughts of hurting yourself or that you would be better off gone, that is beyond con drop, and you deserve support right now. Please use the lines below. Reaching out is strong and brave. The people there are trained, kind, often anonymous and free. You are worth the call.
